Lunchbox Express Providing Free Summer Lunches and Books

Lunchbox Express, a program of Jewish Family Service of Colorado (JFS), will begin providing free summer lunches through the USDA’s Summer Food Service Program on May 28. Lunchbox Express is a simple mobile food delivery system that brings fresh, nutritious lunches via repurposed mini school buses and some static sites. The program targets residential areas with a high percentage of children who typically receive free or reduced-fee lunches at school during the school year.

The lunches are professionally prepared by cooks in a commercial kitchen every morning and include more than 60 varieties of salads, wraps, and sandwiches. The meals comply with USDA nutritional guidelines.

Volunteers play a vital role in the Lunchbox Express program and the agency is seeking volunteers to distribute the meals from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., May 28 to August 16. Volunteers can commit to a single shift or a weekly or daily shift. For more information about volunteering, contact volunteer@jewishfamilyservice.org or visit www.jewishfamilyservice.org/volunteer.

Meals will be provided to all children under 18 regardless of race, color, national origin, sex, age, or disability, and there will be no discrimination in the course of the meal service.

JFS expects to serve more than 25,000 meals to Denver-area children at 16 mobile sites and five static sites this summer. In addition to meals, the Lunchbox Express program will distribute free books to children to promote reading and a love of learning.

Meals and books will be available at the following sites, dates, and times, Monday through Friday (except July 4):
