JFS KidSuccess: Enhancing mental health support in schools
For 30 years, the JFS KidSuccess program has been collaborating with schools to reach youth in a natural setting to help them work through and heal from mental health struggles so they can succeed academically and emotionally. With KidSuccess, students have access to free, quality mental health counseling services whether they are struggling to integrate into a new way of life, dealing with significant trauma, overcoming bullying, or tackling an inability to concentrate. College View Elementary School’s Special Education Senior Team Lead, Jessica Tietz, shares her experience with the program and its impact on their school for the past seven years.
Q: How do you feel the program has impacted the overall well-being of students?
JT: Having JFS located within the school building has allowed students access to therapy who would struggle or be unable to access therapy outside. The current JFS therapist has also been available to help students during the moment of crisis. Students have noted that they feel safe and comfortable talking with the JFS therapist and like that they are in the school.
Q: How well does the program collaborate with other school staff, like counselors and administrative personnel?
JT: The JFS therapist meets with the school mental health team weekly and collaborates with teachers to support students. The JFS therapist also works with school staff to provide referrals and connect families with services outside of the school setting.
Q: Why is school-based mental health so important?
JT: Students need easy access to social and emotional support. JFS provides this support for students who need it.
Q: Please share any changes/trends you’ve noticed over the years.
JT: Knowing that we have additional mental health support, teachers and students feel comfortable reaching out to at least one mental health team member, including the JFS therapist.
Q: Anything else you’d like to share?
JT: JFS is a valuable part of the College View community.
