Calling all participants for our Adaptive Cycling program

When you think about childhood, your bicycle was your passport to freedom and fun. You learned it’s a great excuse (as if you even needed one) to get outside with family and friends and share an experience. Now, JFS is breaking barriers in exploring and getting Douglas, Arapahoe, and Elbert County residents in the intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) community over the age of 18 to enjoy the outdoors, get exercise, and discover new things on their bicycles!

Our adaptive bike program began in June and runs through September at Parker Fieldhouse at 18700 Plaza Dr., Parker, CO 80134. Great news! We are accepting participants and are excited to support adults with disabilities to:

  • Increase mobility.

  • Enjoy the benefits of improved health, both physical and mental.

  • Build social connections.

  • Work on bike and safety skills.

  • Have fun in their community!

The program is wrapping up its first session, and participants have created goals, tried out different bikes, built up strength, endurance, and safety knowledge, and even ventured onto local trails.

“I have seen so many leaps and bounds in several participants in terms of getting more independent on bikes and building up confidence and endurance,” shared Adaptive Bike Coordinator Maria Erlandson, CTRS. “Community members love to look at our bikes and ask questions, and the kids at the Fieldhouse always give us lots of oohs and ahhs as we pass.”

We provide adaptive bikes and safety gear; Medicaid waivers and private pay are accepted.

Feedback from the Parker Fieldhouse staff has been positive. Maria said, “Staff has told me they greatly appreciate JFS bringing in such a cool, inclusive program. They love to come out, watch us bike, and learn more!”

Maria’s favorite moments include riding the Cherry Creek Trail, listening to music, and getting to know all the participants better.
