Welcome our Newest Therapist: Matthew Newbury
Matthew Newbury, LCSW, our newest member of the JFS Mental Health Specialists team, joined JFS three weeks before we closed our offices due to the pandemic. Along with the other therapists, he quickly shifted his practice to teletherapy and is working with clients of all ages through video and phone sessions. He is passionate about helping children, adolescents, adults, couples, and families meet their behavioral health needs. Noted for his down-to earth and non-judgmental approach, Matthew uses education, skill-building, emotional focus, and a touch of humor to assist clients in addressing their issues.
Matthew specializes in Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), an interactive psychotherapy technique used to relieve psychological stress, anxiety, depression, phobias, trauma, and more. He recently combined his passion for art and background as an after-school program director by leading an online “Draw-Along” group for children. It was well-received, and he is offering another one on Monday, June 29.
If you are currently considering therapy, Matthew says, “Do not be afraid of teletherapy. After two to three sessions it feels like you are in the same room as your therapist. There are many benefits to teletherapy, such as not having to drive anywhere and being comfortable in your own space.”
He says one of the best compliments he received from a client is how much he normalizes everything for people. He explains, “There is nothing someone could come in with that I don’t see as a normal part of human behavior. I have no judgements. I am here to support clients as they take the lead in addressing the issues they’re facing.”
