JFS spotlight: Board of Directors

When you think about JFS, our programs and services, the people we serve probably come to mind, and hopefully, how together we’re making an impact throughout our communities. Perhaps you rarely think about our Board of Directors, but this group is responsible for guiding JFS today and into the future—and it’s why we are highlighting their work and introducing our new members this month.

Our Board uses their passion, experience, and wisdom to help us meet our mission to make the world a better place and improve the lives of individuals and families throughout Colorado. All the work, all the good, and all the ways we’re able to make powerful changes in our clients’ lives happen because of leadership and our compassionate Board members (and, of course, our remarkable staff, volunteers, and donors, but those are other spotlights).

A few recent topics our Board addressed include:

  • Navigating through crises like the COVID-19 pandemic and the Marshall Fire.

  • Spearheading our 150th anniversary campaign.

  • Acquiring JFS Altius Farms.

  • Championing a market equity analysis for all staff to ensure our workforce are justly compensated in this thriving market.

Led by our new Board Chair, Leanna Harris, and former chair Aaron Hyatt, the Board of Directors is now in the early phases of creating our new three-year strategic plan, which is exciting. This dedicated group asks difficult questions and finds creative solutions to challenges to guide JFS today and into the future. Our agency is able to make powerful changes in our clients’ lives because of our compassionate Board members.

Our new Board members below are joining our incredible team, and we look forward to them sharing their strengths and talents with the agency and our community.

John Keith is a retired home building industry executive who previously served nine years on the JFS Board. We’re thrilled that he is returning.  Over the last 15 years, he has added value for numerous not-for-profit organizations as a Board member, volunteer, and supporter.

Jose Madrid is an associate attorney in the Denver office of Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher and a member of the firm’s Litigation Department. He keeps an active pro bono practice representing victims of sexual assault in immigration cases and asylum petitions, working with Afghan unaccompanied minors and Venezuelans, and runs employment clinics for refugees and migrants.

Karyn Huberman has more than 20 years of consumer marketing and brand management experience across various industries in the corporate and nonprofit sectors. Currently, she serves as the director of marketing and communications at Graland Country Day School in Denver. Karyn has served on the JFS Family Concert Experience committee and the JFS Board’s marketing sub-committee.

DeJon Thompson and Ron Sherman are joining the Board as our client representatives. They both have received JFS services and bring unique perspectives and a passion for community engagement to serve and create meaningful change to their roles.
