Jewish Disabilities Awareness Day - February 21, 2010
Shelly Christensen, a noted advocate, author and speaker on behalf of Jewish people with disabilities, and performing artists from PHAMALY (The Physically Handicapped Actors and Musical Artists League) will be featured at the second annual Jewish Disabilities Awareness Day on Sunday, February 21 from 1-4 p.m. at the Robert E. Loup Jewish Community Center, 350 S. Dahlia St. The event, sponsored by the Jewish Disabilities Network (JDN), will offer activities for people of all ages and is free and open to the public.
Jewish Disabilities Awareness Day is the cornerstone of the metro Denver Jewish community celebration of National Jewish Disabilities Awareness Month, promoting understanding and inclusion in community life for Jewish people with disabilities. The afternoon will provide an opportunity for Jewish community members with and without disabilities to have a great time together, while learning about creating an inclusive Jewish community through presentations, Purim arts and crafts, entertainment, audiovisual materials, a workshop, and more. The event will offer practical solutions to positively impact the lives of Jewish people with disabilities.
Christensen is the program manager of the Minneapolis Jewish Community Inclusion Program for People with Disabilities, a cutting edge, award-winning program of Jewish Family and Children’s Service of Minneapolis. She is the author of the “Jewish Community Guide to Inclusion of People with Disabilities.” Check out this video that the Inclusion Committee of Congregation Bet Shalom in Minnesota organized and developed for a recent Jewish Disabilities Awarenss Month event.
PHAMALY, founded in 1989, is a theatre group and touring company that performs throughout the greater Denver area. It provides unique theatrical opportunities for people living with physical and developmental disabilities.
